Bleah Tape Recorders!
I have an adversarial relationship with tape recorders. By that, I mean I hate them. Twice in my life, I have attempted to use tape recorders in interview settings for articles I was writing. After all, isn't that what journalists do? I don't really know, since I sort of stumbled into the journalism thing by accident; I wasn't trained for it, and I don't really consider myself a journalist despite the inclusion of my name on the masthead of a local newspaper in my town. But the point is that both times I have attempted to actually appear journalistic (look, I have a tape recorder, therefore I must be a journalist!), the tape recorders in question failed me.
Just now, for instance, I tried to play back an interview I did last week, and here's what I heard on the tape: nothing. Now that's going to come in useful.
Thankfully, I took notes because I don't trust tape recorders. But still, it's the principle of the thing. I know that I am technologically challenged at times (despite the fact that I work in a computer store--oh the irony), but surely tape recorders aren't really that difficult to operate? You put a tape in and hit "record." I mean, honestly.

Perhaps the same touch that dissolves keyboard letters also breaks otherwise good tape recorders.
Also: "Bleah"? An attempt at blah? Or an actual, much more intimidating, exclamation?

"blah" would be an adjective describing the tape recorders, whereas "bleah" denotes a reaction of extreme distaste; yes, an exclamation if you will. but you have to say it right, with your nose all crinkled in disgust, and sticking out your tongue. :)

maybe you should buy a digital recorder, thereby at least removing the tape portion out of the mix. Can't you do digital recording with your ipod or something? (i might actually know if it does or doesn't act as a digital recorder if my mind didn't actually start going, zzzzzzzzzzz, everytime my friends start talking in depth about all things apple.) It might still not work, because you just seem to have bad luck that way, but then would you crinkle your nose at your ipod? I think not.
Oh, and that vowel for bleah? My voice teacher used to call that the throw up vowel, cause that's basically the mouth formation... gross, huh?

one thing i know that works well for recording are minidisc players. Perhaps they are a bit 2000, but you can hook up a little 1/8inch jack microphone to them quite easily.
i'm sure there are even easier tools for recording though. digital is definitely a good way to go.
