Happy Valentine's Day Blah Blah Blah

So it's not enough that I'm single for the umpteenth Valentine's Day in a row... no. I also have to be sick. For the umpteenth time this year. This time with a stomach bug. Which means that I can't even drown my sorrows in chocolate I bought for myself.

Er, not that I did buy chocolate for myself in which to drown my sorrows. But maybe I would have, if I had an appetite.

Anyway, whatever. Back to the main topic, which is: Valentine's Day.

I thought I would do a little research about the history of this holiday, but a quick Google of the phrase "history of Valentine's Day" showed me that lots of other people have already done it. So you can look it up for yourself. I did find one link rather interesting, though. Here's a picture of what showed up on Google under one of the entries:

It was the last part of the description that caught my eye. Why on earth would anyone find a holiday celebrating LOVE burdensome? I mean, can YOU think of a reason? I'm wracking my little brains...

Well, I clicked on the link to find out, but the page never opened, so... guess we'll never know!

All right. I do want to wish everyone a Happy, Unburdensome Valentine's Day. If you are single, look at it this way: at least you didn't have to buy presents for anyone. If you are not single, at least you are not single.

See, there's a bright side to everything.

i'm single. i spent (after splitting the cost) probably $20-$30 and 6+ hours doing a mass valentine for the 33 girls that live in my co-op.

People kept pestering me about what I was planning on doing for Valentine's Day--nothing--so eventually, I talked Tyler into buying me discount coffee at our campus coffee shop--special for Valentine's Day--just so I could tell people that we were doing SOMETHING and I'd stop getting harassed about it.

I'm not a huge fan of the holiday since it tends to just make people feel lonely instead of loved, but today I took a different approach than an embittered soul. (I blogged about it.) Basically, I figured that spending some quality time with the ultimate lover--that would be God--was the best way to start the day. So far, it's been an awesome decision on my part. :)

I hope you have a great day regardless of its connotations and your illness. Also, I hope you get better very soon!

We had a beautiphil in our dorm as well, anonymous roses appeared on our dining table at dawn on valentine's day. And each rose had the name of a girl living in the house (there's 8 of us) with the note 'no woman should be without flowers on valentine's day'. It really made vday so much nicer; a happy day to be celebrated rather than yet another reminder of the have( a date)'s and have not( a date)'s.

So, gracky, I say we take back valentines. Next year I'm thinking to make it a less-cringeworthy day for other people who might find it depressing, and do something anonymous or kind or affirming. Doesn't that sound better than watching bad movies and eating chocolate? (not that we didn't do that as well yesterday...) ;)

i like your idea, becca! i was kind of thinking about doing something like that this year for my co-workers... i wanted to get some hershey kisses and those old-school valentine cards, and hand them out to everybody. ("look, it says 'i choo-choo-choose you,' and there's a picture of a train!" ha!) but then i ended up being sick anyway, and didn't do anything for anyone. :( oh well. next year!

speaking of movies, so one of the cables channels (i think it was Oxygen) was having a "get in the mood" marathon yesterday, and one of the movies they showed was "High Fidelity." i could not figure out what sort of mood they were trying to induce with that one. i mean, i like the movie (mostly because i like john cusack), but i can't say it makes me feel romantic! it's about a jerk who can't figure out why his relationships always tank (hint: because he's a jerk).

anyway, i thought that was funny. in between that movie and eHarmony ads during every commercial break, i was having a fine old time yesterday...

Tangent: That's one of my favourite Simpsons quotes! (Especially if you do the Ralph voice.)
